Our Story
Bodegas Bhilar is a captivating tale of passion, dedication, and a shared dream brought to life by David Sampedro and Melanie Hickman. Nestled in the charming viticultural areas of Elvillar and Kripan, Rioja Alavesa, this boutique winery embodies the essence of terroir-driven winemaking with a commitment to sustainable practices. All 16 hectares of their vineyards are certified organic, lovingly tended to exclusively by plow-horses—a testament to their deep respect for the land.
David Sampedro, a viticultor with roots deeply embedded in the same vineyards he now cultivates, realized early in his career that exceptional wines are crafted in the vineyard. This revelation led him to embrace organic and biodynamic farming, eventually eliminating tractors in favor of horse-drawn plows in 2014. Melanie Hickman, a nature enthusiast and wine lover, joined the journey after a life-changing encounter. She fell in love with David during a layover in Madrid, and their shared passion for wine set their path in motion.
Bodegas Bhilar is more than a winery; it's a testament to love, dedication, and the pursuit of crafting unique wines that express a sense of place. Their "off the grid" solar-powered winery, completed in 2016, stands as a symbol of their sustainable approach.
